In October 1898, Puerto Rico, a Spanish colony in the Caribbean Sea, was made an American colony after the Spanish American War (1898). Since then, Puerto Rico has changed its status with the United States. Ranging from a metropolis-colony relationship to Estado Libre Asociado (or “Associated Free State”) implying a desire to earn statehood.
