In August of 1858, the first telegraphic message was successfully sent and received between Europe (Ireland) to the Americas (New Foundland, Canada). The cable also provided a link between the governments as well as indicated by a direct message from Queen Victoria to US President James Buchanan expressing hope for sustained communication on August 16, 1858.
