Dred Scott was an enslaved man who claimed to have lived in Illinois and the Wisconsin Territory for four years. Therefore, he was no longer a slave and could not be legally held as one. In the court case that followed, in which Scott sued for his and his wife’s freedom, the US Supreme Court found in a 7-2 vote that Scott could not sue for freedom for reasons supported by the legal history of the United States.
