The Pony Express was an overland express mail delivery system. The system relied on a series of relayed horse-mounted riders who would pass mail to other riders to complete a nearly continuous mail delivery system. Although the service was quickly made obsolete due to the efficiency of telegraph messages, the riders had successfully reduced mail delivery time from St. Louis to San Francisco to ten days. After about 19 months of service, the Pony Express was disbanded as emerging technology continued to reduce travel time.
