After the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854, the state of Kansas became a precursor to the American Civil War as Border Ruffians (pro-slave) and Jayhawkers (anti-slave) fought to determine if Kansas would be a slave state or a free state. This conflict gave Kansas the nickname “Bleeding Kansas.”
