On July 9, 1850, US President Zachary Taylor died suddenly due to stomach disease. President Taylor gained fame while serving as major general during the Mexican-American War. Although Taylor was known to keep his political ambitions to himself, by 1848 he was the nominee for the Whig Party nominee and defeated New York Democrat Lewis Cass and Martin Van Buren of the Free Soil Party.
