In mid-November 1865, Union General William Tecumseh Sherman began the Savannah Campaign (also called Sherman’s March and/or Sherman’s March to the Sea) and redefined the meaning of “total war” during an industrialized war. Although “Sherman’s March” is often credited with helping to bring the US Civil War to an earlier end, the way the campaign was fought has been criticized by some.
