In 1768, Samuel Adams and James Otis Jr. published a Circular Letter that argued that the Townshend acts were unconstitutional due to the lack of colonial representation in the British Parliament. Although the letter gained notoriety for arguing that the Parliament should not impose specific laws on colonists, it also admitted that the colonies should not have representation due to the ocean and distance separating the colonies and Great Britain. Samuel Adams was a leader during the American Revolution and was considered a founding father of the United States.
