Although attempts had been made to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a federal holiday from 1968 to 1983, several states had already created days of recognition for the American civil rights leader. During the attempts to debate the merits of creating this holiday, several reasons were offered to explain why the holiday was necessary. To this day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day has different meanings throughout the United States and the world.
