Ulysses S. Grant served as the 18th US President from 1869 to 1877. Although the nation struggled in its recovery from the US Civil War under President Johnson, the leadership of President Grant created momentum for the nation to point itself again toward a stable future. Although Grant was nicknamed “Hero of Appomattox” for his accomplishments as a major general during the US Civil War, he had equal (if not more outstanding) accomplishments as US President.
