On December 22, 1944, the US Army chose the village of Bastogne as a defensive strongpoint to slow or defeat a German surprise assault. Despite having minimal supplies, facing mounting casualties, and enduring tremendously cold weather, the American soldiers fought the enemy to a stalemate. Once the weather changed, air support allowed for additional supplies, and improved driving conditions created a swifter land-based reaction as well.
