Billy the Kid was most likely born Henry McCarty and probably used the alias William H. Bonney during his lifetime. Billy the Kid made a name for himself through his shrewdness, confidence, and willingness to become involved in dangerous situations. Ultimately, it may have been these characteristics (and others) that led to his untimely death at the hands of Sheriff Pat Garret on July 14, 1881.
