President Grover Cleveland first entered politics in 1881, almost by accident. He was asked impromptu to run for mayor of Buffalo, New York. He did and was elected. He became an ardent opponent of corruption, which led to his eventual election to Governor of New York. He continued his stance against corruption as governor, which later landed him as the Democratic nominee for US President in 1885.
