Margaret Chase Smith first entered politics in 1940 as a replacement candidate for her late husband’s unexpired term in the US House of Representatives. She became the first woman from Maine elected to the US Congress. After serving for nearly nine years as a Maine Representative, Smith ran for the US Senate and was eventually elected US Senator in late 1948 and sworn in the next year. This made Smith the first woman to serve in both Houses of the US Congress (and also the first woman Senator from Maine).
