Gouverneur Morris was an American statesman who eventually became Senator of New York. Although he may be best remembered as an early proponent of a single American identity, he has also been noted as a staunch opponent of slavery. He signed the Articles of Confederation and the United States Constitution. Morris also wrote the Preamble to the US Constitution and has been called the “Penman of the Constitution.” His activities in American politics ended in 1803 when he lost a bid for re-election to the US Senate.
