Although the institution of slavery was well-known to Europeans and some indigenous cultures in the Americas took captives resulting from warfare and other modes of cultural exchange. Economic changes that resulted from the European colonization of the Americas resulted in the expansion and transformation of existing practices of enslavement. The growth of slavery in North America has had several positive and negative outcomes in the United States. For these reasons, it is imperative to include the perspective of African Americans before and during the American Revolution.
