In mid-November 1883, railroads in the United States and Canada adopt five standard continental time zones in America to end confusion resulting from thousands of localized “official” times. The railroad is considered by many to be one of the single greatest innovations in transportation and it also impacted the world in different incidental and indirect ways, like time zones.
