In September of 1850, the United States Congress passed five bills meant to defuse tension between slave states and free states. The bills included permitting California to enter the Union as a free state, strengthening the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, territorial aspirations and future concerns of the US expansion, and more. The tension, however, was not wholly defused.
