On June 17, 1788, John Adams became the first Vice President of the United States. Adams received 34 electoral votes to the favored George Washington’s 69 electoral votes. Placing second among the electorate slotted Adams as Vice President rather than President. After earning the position, Adams embarked on defining the role of the Vice President since it had never existed. (Note.
