In the late 1850s, a vein of silver was found in the Virginia Range near Virginia City, Nevada. This discovery, known as The Comstock Lode, helped to kick off a silver rush in the American Southwest during 1860 and through the 1870s. The efforts to extract silver ore efficiently led to innovations in mining techniques and new technologies that led to the immense wealth in Nevada and San Francisco in the late 1800s.
