The original song “Jingle Bells” was first written in 1850 in Massachusetts and later published under “The One Horse Open Sleigh” in 1857. Although the tune was initially connected to a religious Sunday school choir or as a popular drinking song, it was not originally affiliated with Christmas. The association with Christmas followed in the 1860s and 1870s as winter and Christmas music gained popularity in the United States. Throughout the 20th century and to modern times, Jingle Bells and parodies of it have remained popular in the United States.
