George Washington has become well-known for serving as the United States’ first President. Before Washington served as the US chief executive, though, he was an officer in the military. His first stint as a soldier was a major serving for the Virginia colonial militia, an extension of the British government. Washington was awarded the rank of lieutenant colonel during the French and Indian War. Ultimately, however, Washington served as the Commander in Chief of the US after the American Revolution.
