In May of 1539, Spanish explorer and conquistador Hernando de Soto landed near what is today Tampa Bay, Florida. From there, de Soto led a group of a few hundred men on a trek throughout the modern-day Southwest United States and even recorded the first instance of barbecue in Georgia in their journals.
