Levi Strauss immigrated to the United States in 1847. Strauss lived in New York and Kentucky before settling in San Francisco in 1853 (the same year he was naturalized). In 1854, Strauss opened his own wholesale company, Levi Strauss & Co., and imported dry goods from his brother’s New York store. In the early 1870s, Strauss and his customer Jacob W. Davis partnered on the patent for riveted denim pants, which symbolize American culture.
