On December 16, 1773, the Sons of Liberty, conducted the Boston Tea Party. The loosely organized group advocated for colonists’ rights over loyalty to the British Empire. Although tea seemed to be the target, the message focused on the taxation of tea. During the event, the Sons of Liberty destroyed a shipment of tea while it was still on a ship in Boston Harbor. The event foreshadowed the looming American Revolution.
