Harriet Beecher Stowe was a classically educated author and dedicated abolitionist who lived from 1811 to 1896. After graduating from Harford Female Seminary, she moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where she interacted with other intellectuals and experienced diverse cultural interactions given the shipping businesses along the Ohio River. These interactions included escaped slaves, freed former slaves, slave hunters, Irish immigrants, and other migrants.
