The New York Times was first published as the New-York Daily Times on September 18, 1851. The New York Times has been an important news source in the United States since then. The newspaper began a Western Division in 1852 to reflect the United States’ westward expansion. In 1861, the Times began publishing on Sundays to provide additional coverage during the US Civil War. The New York Times has recently adapted to reflect the impact of the digital age.
