From May 1804 to Fall 1806, The Corps of Discovery trekked from the Mississippi River to the Snake and Columbia Rivers and eventually to the Pacific Ocean. Although the mission was tasked with establishing diplomatic contact with the Native Americans of the interior and west United States, they also made extensive notes of the geography, plants, and animals they observed.
