The Articles of Confederation were among the first unifying agreements signed by the original thirteen British colonies in (what would become) the United States. This document was created and signed between November 15, 1777, and February 2, 1781. Although the agreements were enacted on March 1, 1787, and focused on the independence and sovereignty of each state, they resulted in a weak centralized government. The United States Constitution eventually replaced the agreement.
