Read the Question.
What assumptions can a person make about life in the United States in the mid-1850s, given the rise in popularity of the Know Nothing Party?
Scan the Blurb.
The Know Nothing Party was a nativist political party and movement in the United States. Specifically, the Know Nothings focused on subverting the perceived influence of the Catholic Church on the American government. They aimed to build a native-born American Protestant party that could mitigate non-Protestants’ impact on American culture. Ultimately, however, the lack of solid leadership, a unifying central theme, and divisions over views on slavery contributed to the discontinuance of the Know Nothing Party.
