Washington Irving was one of America’s first writers of short stories, essays, and biographies. Irving contributed “Rip Van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” in 1819 and 1820, respectively. Although Irving was a US ambassador to Spain in the 1840s and admired by some British writers, most of his writing was focused on American culture.
