Walt Whitman worked several jobs before publishing his first poems. He was a journalist, a teacher, and a clear. Then, in 1855, Walt Whitman published Leaves of Grass, a collection of poems. Although the book became well-known, some readers initially criticized it for its sensuality. Whitman hoped Leaves of Grass would be viewed as an American epic for the everyday person. His combined use of transcendentalism and realism has earned him the accolade of “The Father of Free Verse” by some writers.
