John Breckinridge served as Vice President of the United States under James Buchanan from 1857-1861. Interestingly, Breckinridge served as a US Senator once his term as Vice President ended. In March of 1861, Breckinridge began his term as US Senator. In December of the same year, Breckinridge was expelled after joining the Confederate Army. During the US Civil War, he served as Confederate States Secretary of War from February to March 1865. (Note.
