King Philip’s War was a conflict between Native American tribes (Wampanoags, Narragansetts, and others) and English settlers living in the New England Colonies. The war took place from 1675 to 1678 and resulted in 2,000 to 3,000 casualties and losses on both sides, with the English having a higher casualty rate than the Natives. It was the first major sustained conflict between the English and the Native Americans and caused violence and horrors on both sides. Important outcomes:

  • Wampanoag tribe and their allies suffered heavy losses, including people, land, and resources.
  • English colonists began to expand their settlements into land that was previously held by Natives.
  • Tensions remained high between Natives and Europeans after the war as the economic impact of the war caused the desire for additional resources.
