The Song of Hiawatha was an epic poem by American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in 1855. The poem told of the adventures of the Native American characters Hiawatha (an Ojibwe warrior) and Minnehaha (a Dakota woman). It has been widely accepted that Longfellow combined his friendship with Ojibwe Chief George Copway, interactions with Black Hawk and other Sauk cultures in the Boston area, and the Native American ethnographical research of Henry Rowe Schoolcraft to help shape his epic.
