In 1854, Mexico agreed to sell a small piece of land just south of present-day Arizona and New Mexico to the United States. There were several reasons for this agreement including the Mexican government’s need for money and the US desire to have certain land for westward expansion. This was the last major land purchase by the United States from Mexico and helped the United States get closer to achieving Manifest Destiny.
