Matthew Perry was a US Naval Officer during the first half of the 19th century. Although he commanded a few different ships during some US conflicts, such as the Mexican-American War, he has been mostly remembered for his efforts in opening up Japan to US culture and economic trade with the United States. He has always been remembered for his advocacy of the steam engine as a source of power for the US Navy.
