After serving as the Collector of the Port of New York, Chester A. Arthur eventually won the nomination to vice-president and succeeded after President Garfield was assassinated in 1881. President Arthur served out the remainder of his term (1881-1885) and did not win a second term. During his time in office, Arthur became known for the reforms he enacted on the Civil Service Commission, known as the Pendleton Act of 1883.
