The California Gold Rush lasted from 1848-1855 and resulted in an influx of people (Americans and immigrants) to California. For example, San Francisco grew from 200 residents in 1846 to 36,000 in 1852. The growing communities were tasked with creating rules and regulations as towns grew. The combination of quick wealth, the ability to be autonomous and anonymous, and the chance to experience novel things were some of the reasons that Americans and immigrants to America were pulled to California.
