In 1858, two politicians from Illinois held seven debates meant to campaign for a Senate seat from that state. Stephen A. Douglas, a Democrat, was the incumbent Senator, and his challenger was former Representative Abraham Lincoln, a Republican. According to the rules, Douglas and Lincoln attempted to persuade the Illinois General Assembly to vote for them, not the state electorate. Among the issues debated by the politicians were the Kansas-Nebraska Act, the Missouri Compromise, the Dred Scott Case, and more.
