He was thought to personify the opportunity in America because he became US President but was born into poverty, had nearly illiterate parents, and did not master the academic basics until he was a young adult. Unfortunately for Johnson, the leadership vacuum left by Abraham Lincoln’s Death and the consequences of the US Civil War proved to be a challenge for President Andrew Johnson.
