In November 1877, American inventor Thomas Edison explained that he had invented the machine that could record sound and play the same sound back again. Edison called this machine the phonograph and it is often regarded as the foundation of all recorded music. One phenomenon of recorded music near the turn of the 20th century was the mixtape which would not have been possible without the phonograph and the related cassette player.
