“Give me liberty, or give me death,” Patrick Henry famously said. Henry made that statement at the Second Virginia Convention on March 23, 1775. Henry helped to persuade Virginians to support the American Revolution and advocated for a Virginia militia free from the oversight of the British Government and its representatives in Virginia. Henry was active in the American Revolution, including challenging the British when they confiscated gunpowder from Virginia, leading a militia during the war, and eventually serving as Virginia’s first and sixth governor.
